Language use and language attitude of Plang ethnic group in Ban Huay Nam Khun, Chiang-Rai province

Abstract: The objective of the study is to investigate language use and language attitudes of the Plang ethnic group in Ban Huay Nam Khun, Chiang-Rai province to determine the current Plang language situation and to predict whether or not the Plang ethnolinguistic group will survive in the future. The data was collected using a sociolinguistic questionnaire, including interviewing a sample of 174 Plang subjects who were categorized by the variables of sex, age, education level and ethnic group. The results indicate that Plang people use their mother tongue in the intra-group. Standard Thai is used for education, trade and government official domains, while Thai Yai is mostly used in the religion domain. The hypothesis testing shows that there is no significant difference in all domains by the variable of sex, but there is in regard to age and education level variables. The oldest group and those with no education use Plang language more than other groups. The teenagers mostly use Standard Thai, while those in the middle-aged group and those in the bachelor group use Kam-muang more than other groups. For the ethnic group variable, it shows that there is no difference in the language use in education and government official domains, however those of pure Plang use Plang language more than those of mixed ethnicity. As to the attitudes, it shows Plang people have a neutral attitude, tending strongly to be positive towards both their own ethnic group and language. The hypothesis testing indicates that there is a significant difference of attitudes toward their own ethnic group and language in almost all variables except the sex variable. The oldest group and those with no education have more positive attitudes toward their own ethnic group and language than any other groups. The middle-aged group and those with higher education have a more positive attitude towards their own language than the teenaged group and those with lower education. While those who are pure ethnic have a more positive attitude towards their own ethnic group and language than those who are ethnically mixed. The results of the study show that Plang people still maintain their own language in the intra-group situation, even though they have begun to shift from monolingual to bilingual/multilingual. However, the actual shift is not strongly related to positive attitude toward their own ethnolinguistic group. Therefore, the researcher predicted that the Plang ethnic group and their own language will survive in the future.

Abstract: การศึกษานี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาการใช้ภาษา และทัศนคติที่มีต่อกลุ่มและภาษาของตนเอง ของกลุ่มคนปลังในหมู่บ้านห้วยน้ำขุ่น จังหวัดเชียงราย ซึ่งช่วยให้อธิบายถึงสถานการณ์ของภาษา ปลังในปัจจุบันและคาดการณ์การคงอยู่ของภาษาและกลุ่มชาติพันธุ์ปลังในอนาคตได้ เก็บข้อมูลโดย ใช้แบบสอบถามสัมภาษณ์กลุ่มตัวอย่างประชากรจำนวน 174 คน แบ่งข้อมูลตามลักษณะโครงสร้าง ประชากร ได้แก่ เพศ อายุ การศึกษาและชาติพันธุ์ การศึกษาการใช้ภาษาพบว่า คนปลังใช้ภาษาปลังกับคนปลังด้วยกัน และใช้ภาษาอื่นกับคนต่าง กลุ่มตามแวดวงการใช้ภาษา ภาษาไทยมาตรฐานใช้ในแวดวงการศึกษา การค้าและราชการ ภาษา ไทยใหญ่ใช้ในแวดวงศาสนา การทดสอบสมมติฐานพบว่า ไม่มีนัยสำคัญในทุกแวดวงการใช้ภาษา ระหว่างเพศ แต่มีนัยสำคัญระหว่างอายุและการศึกษา ผู้สูงอายุและผู้ไม่มีการศึกษาใช้ภาษาปลังมาก กว่ากลุ่มอื่น วัยรุ่นใช้ภาษาไทยมาตรฐานมากที่สุด วัยกลางคนใช้ภาษาคำเมืองมากกว่ากลุ่มอื่น และ ไม่พบว่ามีนัยสำคัญในการใช้ภาษาระหว่างปลังแท้และปลังผสมในแวดวงการศึกษา และราชการ การศึกษาทัศนคติทางภาษาพบว่า คนปลังมีทัศนคติที่ดีต่อกลุ่มและภาษาของตนเอง การ ทดสอบสมมติฐานพบว่า มีนัยสำคัญในทัศนคติต่อกลุ่มและภาษาของตนเองในทุกตัวแปรยกเว้นตัว แปรเพศ ผู้สูงอายุและผู้ไม่มีการศึกษามีทัศนคติต่อกลุ่มและภาษาของตนเองดีกว่ากลุ่มอื่น วัยกลาง คนและผู้ที่มีการศึกษาสูงกว่ามีทัศนคติต่อภาษาของตนเองดีกว่าวัยรุ่นและผู้ที่มีการศึกษาต่ำกว่า ปลังแท้มีทัศนคติต่อกลุ่มและภาษาของตนเองดีกว่าปลังผสม จากการศึกษาพบว่า คนปลังยังคงใช้ภาษาปลังกับคนปลังด้วยกัน ถึงแม้ว่าจะเริ่มเปลี่ยนจากผู้ พูดภาษาเดียวเป็นผู้พูดสองภาษาหรือหลายภาษา แต่การที่คนปลังมีทัศนคติที่ดีต่อกลุ่มและภาษาของ ตนเอง จึงมีแนวโน้มว่าภาษาและกลุ่มชาติพันธุ์ปลังจะยังคงอยู่ต่อไปในอนาคต
