Abstract:
This documentary research is aimed at studying techniques of translation and
Thai language usage in translating scientific news in the Lok Wannee daily
newspaper. 527 parallel pieces of news have been selected.
The results indicated that Thai language usage in translating scientific news
consisted of: 1) abbreviations, shortened words by using Thai punctuation marks and
words; 2) synonyms; 3) exaggerated words or phrase; 4) signs; 5) colloquial words;
6) addition of information, and 7) reduction of information.
In this study, the researcher also found 4 levels of translation techniques, which
were lexical, phrase, sentence and paragraph levels. The results showed that the lexical
level consisted of 5 techniques: translation of proper nouns, translation of culturally
distinct words, translation of currencies, translation of measurements, and translation
of words associated with time or day. The phrase level consisted of 2 techniques:
translation of headlines, and translation of article body. The sentence level consisted of
2 techniques: changing passive sentences into active sentences as well as changing
quotation sentences into non-quotation sentences. With respect to the paragraph level,
2 techniques were employed, namely: adjustment of paragraphs and rearrangement of
statements. All techniques of translation were employed by the translator aiming at
producing good translations.
