Abstract:
The purposes of this study were : 1. to construct and develop an analytical ability test for upper secondary school students in Ubon Ratchathani province ; 2. to investigate the quality of the analytical ability test; and 3. to create the overall norm for analytical test for upper secondary school students in Ubon Ratchathani province.
The samples of the study were 1,200 students consisting of 400 Matthayom Suksa 4, 400 Matthayom Suksa 5, and 400 Matthayom Suksa 6 students in the schools under the jurisdiction of Ubon Ratchathani Educational Service Areas. The samples were selected through a multi-stage random sampling technique, with 450 students for the first test, another 450 students for the second test, and 1,200 students for the third test respectively.
The analytical ability test, based on the cognitive information processing theory of intelligence, consisted of 55 items with four multiple choices each. The statistical procedures employedin the study were mean, standard deviation, Biserial correlation, and internal consistency coefficient of Kurder Richardson Formula 20 (KR-20). The test was administered three times. The first and the second times were to find the difficulty index and discriminating values for further development of the test items, and the third was to find the reliability value, the internal correlation and standard error of the test.
The research findings were as follows:
1. The analytical ability test constructed and developed using Cognitive Information Processing Theory of Intelligence consisted of 55 items which included 14 items on verbal ability, 18 items on logic and 23 items on figures and symbols.
2. The analytical ability test constructed had the item difficulty index ranging from .145-.912 with the item discriminating index of .132-.593, and the internal correlation of .915. on individual dimension, the test items on verbal ability gained difficulty index of .569-.891 with the item discriminating index of .304-.534 ; The test items on logical diagram having difficulty index of .458 .835 with the discriminating index of .263 - .584; and the test items on figure and symbols having Difficulty index of .145 - .912 with the discriminating index ranging from .132-.593.
3. The local norms of the analytical ability test for the upper secondary school students in Ubon Ratchathani province had an interval score ranging from T20.0 to T64.7. To have the same standard, the researcher established a local norms in terms of normal T score, namely, from T61.0 and above Ca raw score of 51 and above) refers to the students with very high level of analytical ability; T510 to T60.9 Ca raw score of 41 to 50) refers to the students with high analytical ability; T41.0 to T50.9 Ca raw score of 31 to 40) refrers to the students with low analytical ability; the score lower than T31.0 Ca raw score below 21) refers to the students with very low analytical ability.
