Abstract:
This study aimed to enhance the natural dyeing of cotton fabric using an extract from Artocarpus heterophyllus (jackfruit heartwood). Cetyltrimethylammonium Bromide (CTAB) was employed as a cationic pretreatment agent to improve dye fixation, while the effects of mordants-ferrous sulfate (FeSO4 ·7H2O) and aluminum potassium sulfate (AlK(SO4 )2 ·12H2O)-on color shade and wash fastness were investigated. Sanforized cotton fabric was used as the substrate. The dyed samples were evaluated for color characteristics in the CIE Lab* system and tested for wash fastness according to ISO 105-C06 using gray scale ratings. The results showed that CTAB-treated cotton exhibited higher color strength (K/S) and deeper shades than untreated fabric, indicating improved dye absorption. Shade adjustment with ferrous sulfate reduced the color difference (ΔE), producing hues closer to the desired tone, while aluminum potassium sulfate enhanced wash fastness, achieving gray-scale ratings of 3-4. These findings confirm that cationic pretreatment with CTAB, in combination with suitable mordants, significantly improves the natural dyeing performance of jackfruit heartwood dye in terms of color intensity, shade uniformity, and wash durability. The study demonstrates a practical and environmentally friendly approach for producing naturally dyed cotton fabrics with enhanced fastness properties suitable for sustainable textile applications
