Abstract:
This investigation aimed to evaluate the effects of beta-glucans and mannanoligosaccharides (MOS) in dog food on safety, immune response, and fecal bacteria. Fifteen Beagles, with an average age of 1.44±0.44 years and an average weight of 11.71±1.89 kg, were allocated randomly into a completely randomized design, dividing the dogs into three groups to receive food supplemented with different concentrations of beta-glucans and MOS. Dogs received food with no beta-glucans or MOS supplementation (T1), received beta-glucans (23.73%) and MOS (17.20%) supplementation (T2), and received beta-glucans (25.00%) and MOS (24.00%) supplementation (T3) for 56 days. The results showed that groups supplemented with beta-glucans and MOS (T2 and T3) did not affect food intake, body weight change, hematology, blood chemistry, and IL-2 concentrations. It was found that T3 had a significant reduction in IgA concentrations (p<0.05) after 28 days of supplementation. Furthermore, T2 showed the highest increase in the population of fecal Lactobacillus spp. (p<0.05), and both beta-glucans and MOS-supplemented groups (T2 and T3) significantly reduced the E. coli populations in feces (p<0.05). This study concluded that the supplementation of beta-glucans and MOS in dog food is safe for dogs as feed additive in dog food, can increase fecal Lactobacillus spp. populations, and reduce E. coli populations in feces
