Hydrogen for a sustainable future : a comprehensive life cycle assessment of sustainable production pathways
Abstract:
Hydrogen is emerging as a key solution for reducing greenhouse gas emissions in Internal Combustion Engines (ICE), offering a pathway to a cleaner energy future. However, the environmental impacts of hydrogen production must be critically assessed, as its processes often involve high energy consumption and significant carbon dioxide emissions. This study evaluates the life cycle environmental impacts of three hydrogen production pathways using Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) with the ReCiPe 2016(H) impact method. The pathways analyzed include Steam Methane Reforming (SMR), Alkaline Electrolysis (AE), and Biomass Gasification (BG). The gate-to-gate system boundary is employed, with data derived from literature and calculated inventories for a functional unit of 1,000 kg of hydrogen produced. The research also incorporates scenarios that substitute conventional inputs with more sustainable alternatives: biomethane instead of natural gas for SMR, renewable electricity for AE, and forest residue feedstocks compared to industrial biomass for BG. The results indicate that the choice of feedstock and energy source significantly influences the environmental performance of each production method. The analysis shows that the principal drawbacks of SMR include high rates of global warming and resource depleted from the utilization of fossil fuel. AE presents capability for almost zero emission when using electricity from renewable sources due to the major environmental impact contribution is from energy consumption; BG has lower carbon emissions but problems regarding toxicity and resource use which require better management in biomass acquisition and treatment of the process
