Soil properties, aboveground biomass and plant nutrients of exotic tree plantations at the Saithong silvicultural research station in Prachuap Khiri Khan Province, Thailand
Abstract:
The study was aimed at determining soil properties, aboveground biomass, and plant nutrients of exotic tree plantations. Eucalyptus urophylla, Acacia crassicarpa and Acacia aulacocarpa in 27 years old plant spacing 2 m. x 2 m. The plot size and tree measurement currently being used were based on 20 m. x 20 m. Using a completely randomized design, three soil samples were collected from soil depths of 0-10, 10-30, and 30-50 cm. Method of biomass measurement was made at three plantations at Saithong Silvicultural Research Station, Prachuap Khiri Khan province. It is advisable to sample at least six density classes. Tree biomass measurements largely follow those described, diameter at breast height (DBH) 1.3 m. aboveground measured from the uphill side of the tree and thereafter at 1 m. intervals along the stem to the top of the tree including all large branches. Put the samples such as wood, branches and leaves in an oven and dry at 80°C for 24-48 hours. Put the samples back in the oven and dry again for constant weight stored in paper bags for analysis. The results showed that Soil type in these stands was sandy loam. Soil moisture percentage (12.85%) was significantly the highest in the Eucalyptus urophylla plantation. Phosphorus (18.2 mg/kg DW), magnesium (6.98 cmolc/kg DW), and potassium (6.98 cmolc/kg DW) contents were also the greatest in the Eucalyptus urophylla plantation. Organic matter content was the highest in the Acacia crassicarpa plantation (7.59%), while nitrogen (0.04%) and calcium (36.17cmolc/kg DW) contents were the highest in the Acacia aulacocarpa plantation. Tree density and aboveground biomass was highest in the Acacia aulacocarpa plantation. The nutrient losses of stem the total nitrogen content was the most lost in Acacia aulacocarpa plantation (2.78 ton per hectare). Phosphorus, potassium, calcium and magnesium content were the greatest in the Eucalyptus urophylla plantation (0.46, 0.16, 1.44 and 0.12 tons per hectare, respectively)
