Study and design of a photovoltaic-diesel hybrid sysiem for a remote village electrification in Vietnam
Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to provide a methodology for the design of a PV-diesel hybrid system for a remote rural village in Vietnam based on the minimum acceptable battery capacity and inverter power as well as load profile and the solar radiation at the site. The pre-assumption of the energy proportion to be produced from the diesel-generator and the time for that generator's operation based on the load profile through calculation of the load factor is also included in this study. Next, system simulation and optimization was performed for analyzing and comparing between the different energy proportions which would be produced from the diesel-generator and the PV array by using a Siemens developed Excel spreadsheet. Using a "Life Cycle Cost Analysis" method, which assumed 6% for the discount rate, 5% for general inflation and 7% for the fuel price escalation and a fuel price added cost for transportation of 50%, we calculate a minimum electricity cost of $0.67/kWh. The minimum electricity price that we can get depends on the site-specific load profile, solar radiation and the fuel prices. For this study, a minimum cost of electricity can be achieved when the load demand of non-peak load period that is equal to 52% of total daily load demand was met by energy supplied from PV array and battery through the inverter. By this way, the battery capacity and inverter power could be reduced to the minimum acceptable values. The results of this study also show that when the average load power of the peak load period is bigger than the average load power of non-peak load period by about 5 times, the diesel generator running daily during the peak load period with an energy proportion of about 50% will get the highest economic efficiency. The methodology, which is provided in this study, can be used for sizing the components of PV-diesel hybrid systems based on the solar radiation at the site and the load profile of the village. For the system simulation and optimization, the Siemens Excel spreadsheet can be used for analysis and a comparison of different energy proportions provided from the PV array. However, the Siemens Excel spreadsheet should be improved to be more flexible to become a complete software for designing PV-diesel hybrid systems and analyzing different hybrid system configurations.
