Vehicle velocity estimation by using numerical models
Abstract:
This paper presents the use of backward Euler, trapezoidal rule, and Taylor expansion models for estimating vehicle velocity. A first-order nonlinear vehicle motion model underlies these numerical approaches. These models estimate velocity without requiring direct chassis velocity measurements, unlike conventional state observers that depend on both force input and velocity output signals. As a result, the observer becomes unnecessary when velocity measurements are unavailable. Numerical methods for solving ordinary differential equations (ODEs) are employed to construct the three models. Simulation results confirm that the estimated velocities are comparable to the velocity response obtained from a cruise control system. The trapezoidal rule model demonstrates higher accuracy among the three methods. The findings indicate that equivalence between a speedometer and the proposed numerical models is feasible.
