An ESP needs analysis for Thai care assistants in an international school in Bangkok
Abstract:
This study conducts a needs analysis for an English for Specific Purposes (ESP) course tailored to Thai care assistants working at an international school in Bangkok, Thailand. The research investigates both their target needs and learning needs through three research questions. Thirty-seven participants, including 13 care assistants (CAs), 13 teachers, 9 teaching assistants, and 2 HR hiring officers, were involved. Using a mixed-methods approach, data were collected through validated questionnaires and semi-structured interviews, with random sampling continuing until data saturation. The findings reveal a number of key target needs, such as giving instructions to young children, managing emergencies, and collaborating with colleagues. Identified lacks include limited vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, and listening comprehension, particularly with diverse accents, alongside confidence issues in spoken communication. The CAs expressed a strong preference for interactive learning methods, including role-plays, group activities, and simulations supported by authentic materials. Based on these findings, a 40-hour ESP course is proposed, featuring practical instructional strategies and a weekly instructional model of Review, Practice, Feedback, and Apply. The course aims to enhance CAs communication skills, address specific linguistic challenges, and build confidence in real-world interactions. This tailored approach offers a structured, context-specific solution for improving the English proficiency of care assistants in an international school setting.
