Cosmic rays flux correlation and algorithm development for pulse selection
Abstract:
Cosmic-ray flux variations and neutron monitor data analysis are essential for understanding space weather and cosmic-ray anisotropies. This thesis investigates the correlation of cosmic-ray flux measured by neutron monitors at different locations and develops an improved algorithm for pulse selection in neutron detectors. The first part focuses on analyzing neutron monitor count rate correlations between McMurdo (MCMU) and Jang Bogo (JBGO) stations in Antarctica using data from 2015 to 2017. Cross-correlation analysis reveals distinct components, including a diurnal anisotropy signature and time lags linked to the Earth 's magnetic field, with results demonstrating that the time lag associated with cosmic-ray anisotropy matches the response-weighted asymptotic longitudes of the two stations. The second part presents an advanced algorithm for pulse selection in NM64 neutron detectors, effectively separating pile-up pulses using a reference pulse derived from isolated events. By iteratively refining the pulse shape and applying a polynomial-Gaussian fitting technique, the algorithm enhances the accuracy of neutron event identification. Experimental validation using data from the Princess Sirindhorn Neutron Monitor (PSNM) confirms that the approach significantly reduces pulse misidentification, improving the accuracy of cosmic-ray flux measurements. By integrating correlation analysis and pulse selection refinement, this work advances neutron monitor data processing, leading to better assessments of cosmic-ray anisotropies and space weather impacts.
