An Analysis of Grammatical Rules of Burmese Language in Secondary School Handbook

Abstract: The purposes of the study were: (1) to study the structure of Burmese grammatical rules from Burmese core curriculum of Secondary School’s Handbook, (2) to analyse teaching methods of Burmese language, some grammatical rules and sentences of Burmese language, (3) to make clear for grammatical rules in Burmese language. The study is a mixed method researches between a quantitative method and qualitative method. A questionnaire is used for collecting quantitative data from 380 students who are studying in Ranonghtarni school in Ranong City. The samples of the study were 191 students studying at Ranonghtarni school Ranong city, Ranong province Thailand. A questionnaire was used for collecting data. For analyzing quantitative data, statistics including Frequency, Percentage, Mean and Standard Deviation is used. An in-dept interview was used for collecting data from 10 teachers and a content analysis was used for analyzing qualitative data. The results of this research were found that: 1) Burmese language grammatical rules in the handbook are very difficult to understand for students. Moreover, the students articulated dissatisfaction and no sufficient variety with subject and content of the handbook. There is no enough for grammartical rules and functional organization between subject and content, vocabulary and grammar items, grammar exercises and adequate vocabulary of the handbook. In contrast to this, they are out of date. Therefore, the handbook cannot solve to manage the lesson, discussion and provide gradually process to learning and an authentic plan of action to teachers. 2) Teaching methods need to put clear basic Burmese grammar to be easy for students. Burmese grammar teaching method that is the foundation of the students to be wonderful in the future life of teachers who need to tend the teaching technic carefully are very important for our generation at Ranonghtarni secondary school and other schools. teachers face major difficulties teaching methods for lack of proper training, limited contact hours and most of students are not interested in Burmese language grammatical rules in the handbook. So, teaching method needs to be changed for students and teachers, government also support to all teachers to training because teaching metod is bored in the classroom. Teaching methods should apply interactive for teachers and students. 3) The Burmese language grammatical rules in school’s handbook should be rewritten for teachers and students. This would help improve teaching quality for teachers. Moreover, government should support teaching materials, improving resources and facilities, and teaching technology to be up to date for the teaching and learning methods and changing up to date effective education system and handbook.
