Measurement and determinants of labor productivity in the Northeast of Thailand
Abstract:
The first objective of this research is to analyse the measurements and determinants of labour productivity at macro level in the Northeast of Thailand and its determining factors by measuring APL and MPL during 1981-2015 both of an overall region and eleven sub-sectors. The OLS method is used to analyse the effect of determinants, including capital-labour ratio, R&D expenditure, education, health, and structural change on labour productivity. The findings indicate that the average growth rate of labour productivity for sub-sectors in almost all sub sectors is higher than the Northeast average except wholesale and retail trade sectors. The capital-labour ratio, the government spending on education and health, as well as structural change affect labour productivity the same as the overall in Northeast except government health expenses which is statistically insignificant in the overall in Northeast.
The second objective is to analyse the measurements and determinants of labour productivity at micro or establishment level in the Northeast and its determining factors. The questionnaires are used as a research tool to collect information from 326 establishments which are divided into 240 of food product industries, 33 of textile industries, and 53 of wearing apparel industries. Labour productivity is calculated from value added divided by total working hours. Hierarchical regression analysis is employed to analyse the factors that determining labour productivity. The findings show that the food product industry has average total labour productivity equal 195.52 baht/ person/ hour, the textile industry has the average total labour productivity about 236.44 baht/ person/ hour, and the wearing apparel industry has the average total labour productivity equal 170.53 baht/ person/ hour. For food products industry, there are five factors that affect labour productivity, namely the total number of workers, physical capital /labour, patent applications, proportion of exports to total sales, and labour unions. Wearing apparel industry, there are four factors that affect labour productivity. The results are consistent with the food products industry except patent applications, which do not affect labour productivity in the wearing apparel industry. And as for the textile industry, the only factor in the physical capital group affecting labour productivity is physical capital /labour.
