Developing an environmental education model of the royally initiated oxidation pond method of municipal wastewater treatment for international middle school students in Bangkok, Thailand

Abstract: Man's uncontrolled activities have played a huge part in the deterioration of the natural environment and if no decisive and meaningful action is taken, the achievement of a sustainable environment will still be far-fetched. In line with this, environmental education has been identified as a useful tool in curbing environmental problems. In this study, the transfer of Laem Phak Bia Environmental Research and Development Project (LERD) Project oxidation pond method of wastewater treatment was transferred to some international middle school students in Bangkok, Thailand. Students from ten different nationalities and in Grades six to eight were used for the study. The key ideas were extracted from the in-depth analysis of the oxidation pond knowledge while a content analysis approach was used to extract the related topics from the science curriculum of the school. Subsequently, the key ideas were infused into related water quality topics in the curriculum. The findings revealed that the students had low levels of environmental awareness, knowledge, attitudes, skills, and behavior which significantly improved at the end of program implementation. Only 22% of the students had previously participated in wastewater education, 90% of them suggested that environmental education should be made compulsory in schools while 89% of them agreed that environmental education is a useful tool in water quality management. There was no significant value between the environmental skills of the students in the control group before and after the environmental education program F (1, 10) =1.494, p=0.250. It can then be inferred that the students in the control group did not develop any skills as they were not involved in the program. Finally, a suitable environmental education model was developed at the end of the study which can easily be applied in teaching other environmental topics in schools.
