Systematics of family Baetidae (Order Ephemeroptera) in Southern and Western Thailand
Abstract:
The first mass survey of the small minnow mayflies (Ephemeroptera, Baetidae) was conducted. This family is one of the most diverse and widespread groups of mayflies, but members of the family have not been well known due to their small body size. Only 16 species in nine genera were reported from Thailand. Lack of data in Thailand are leading to the aim of this study that to identify the family Baetidae in southern and western Thailand based on morphological characters combined with genetic approach by DNA barcoding technique. Specimens were collected between May 2017 to May 2019 from 11 provinces and 70 localities by D-frame net and hand-picking methods. About 1,500 specimens were classified into 16 genera including Alainites, Anafroptillum, Baetis, Centroptella, Indocloeon, Labiobaetis, Libebiella, Nigrobaetis, Platybaetis, Procloeon, Procerobaetis, Securiops and Tenuibaetis with three new distinct genera were placed as Cymbalcloeon, Unknown Genus III and Unknown Genus IV. Furthermore, a new genus, Cymbalcloeon including one species C. sartorii Suttinun, Gattolliat and Boonsoong, 2020 and two new taxa from I. (H.) continentale Kluge & Suttinun, 2020 and Procerobaetis totuspinosus Suttinun & Boonsoong, 2021 were reported. Moreover, this study discovered probably 39 species from western and southern of Thailand using an integrative taxonomy. This study served a better understanding about a species diversity and the distribution of the family Baetidae in Thailand.
