The effect of a fermented potato extract protein on visceral organ weight and development of semitendinosus muscle in fetal pigs
Abstract:
The aim of this study was to examine the effect of a fermented potato extract protein supplementation on development of muscular tissue in fetal pigs. It was believed that an effect of a fermented potato extract protein could increase IGF-I (insulin-like growth factor-I) level in serum of pigs. IGF-I can stimulate myogenic cell proliferation and differentiation and induce myoblast proliferation and fusion. Thirty pregnant gilts were randomly selected and divided into six groups (n=5/group) for supplementing with or without a fermented potato extract protein (Lianol® ) as follow: 1: gilts with no supplementation, 2-6: gilts with the fermented potato extract protein at different gestational ages; 0-116, 0-90, 0-55, 56- 90 and 91-116, respectively. After farrowing, two piglets from each sow, a low birth wight (LBW < 1200 g) and a normal birth weight (NBW ≥ 1200 g) piglets, were measured for the birth weight, organ weight including semitendinosus muscle (ST) and morphometric analysis of ST. The results showed that there were not significant differences in birth weight among groups of LBW and NBW piglets, but the significant differences (p < 0.05) were found in kidney weight of LBW piglets and the stomach weight of NBW piglets. The semitendinosus muscle characteristics showed no significant effect of the fermented potato extract protein for ST weight, length, girth, muscle cross-sectional area (MCSA) and number of primary and secondary fibers at birth, although the secondary to primary fiber ratio and total muscle number were significant differences among groups. The results of this study could not confirm clearly that the fermented potato extract protein added on gestating sow diet could improve the body growth and muscle development of newborn piglets.
