Termite survey in Thailand and evaluation of disodium octaborate tetrahydratea gainst coptotermes gestroi (Blattodea: Rhinotermitidae)

Abstract: This study was organized into two parts with the first part on termite distribution by means of sample collections, identification, and GIS mapping and the second on the disodium octaborate tetrahydrate (DOT) toxicity and ability of toxic-food transfer on Coptotermes gestroi. Regarding the first part, all coordinate locations of termite species were obtained from on online database and the distribution map was created. The survey was conducted in six regions and samples were preserved before identification. Only 19 studies, comprising eight publications, eight reports and three theses, were made up a total of 44 coordinates in 14 provinces. A total of 497 coordinates from 57 sub-districts were surveyed resulting in 34 termite species in 14 genera. As for the second part, termites were placed in the experimental boxes with untreated papers. The DOT chemical at three concentrations (0.25%, 0.50% and 1.00%) was prepared onto the Whatman papers. Untreated papers were replaced by treated papers. Daily observation of termite mortality was made and recorded for 14 days after starting to expose with chemical. The survival rate and survival curve of termites were generated through coxregression by using SPSS software. The ability of DOT transfer was conducted by comparing the 3 different ratios of donor and recipient. Workers fed on the paper soaked in Nile blue A before allowing termites to feed on paper soaked with 0.25% of DOT and finally treated termites were moved to the recipient group. Mortality of donors and recipients were recorded. The two-way ANOVA was used to compare the ability of food transfer using R studio. Termites died after exposure with various concentrations of the DOT chemical were recorded. The low concentration at 0.25% showed lower percent mortality than that of the high concentration and at the low concentration termites were slowly killed compared to those termites exposed to high concentration of 0.50% and 1.00%. Additionally, termites successfully transfer the toxic food to recipients in the same container and mortality was observed.
