Abstract: The taxonomical and anatomical studies of the genus Piper L. (Piperaceae) in Laos were undertaken during 2019-2020. The taxonomic study based on field survey, herbarium specimens, publications and databases. 31 taxa (30 species and two varieties) are enumerated as Piper betle L., P. boehmeriifolium (Miq.) Wall. ex. C.DC. var. boehmeriifolium and var. glabricaule (C.DC.) M.G.Gilbert & N.H.Xia, P. chantaranothaii Suwanph. & D.A. Simpon., P. doiphukaense Suwanph. & Chantar., P. griffithii C.DC., P. harmandii C.DC., P. kurzii Ridl., P. laetispicum C.DC., P. laosanum C.DC., P. leptostachyum Wall. ex. Miq., P. lonchites Roem. & Schult., P. longum L., P. massiei C.DC., P. nigrum L., P. peepuloides Roxb., P. polysyphonum C.DC., P. retrofractum Vahl., P. ribesioides Wall., P. sarmentosum Roxb., P. sintenense Hatus, P. suipigua BuchHam. ex. D.Don., P. sylvaticum Roxb., P. thomsonii (C.DC.) Hook.f., P. thorelii C.DC., P. umbellatum L., P. wallichii (Miq.)Hand.-Mazz., P. species1, P. species2, P. species3 and P. species4. Nine species are newly recorded for Laos as P. chantaranothaii, P. doiphukaense, P. griffithii, P. kurzii, P. laetispicum, P. lonchites, P. peepuloides, P. suipigua and P. retrofractum. Three species were introduced for cultivation as P. betle, P. nigrum and P. retrofractum. Four unknown species might be new to science. The morphological characters can be used for species identification as habit, inflorescence, floral bract, infructescence and fruit. Six species as P. laetispicum, P. sylvaticum, P. thomsonii, P. species2, P. species3 and P. species4 were selected as representative for anatomical study using paraffin method. The results showed that the stomatal types are cyclocytic, staurocytic and tetracytic. The midrib is convex only one or both surfaces. The styloid, prismatic, silica crystal sand and raphide crystals are presented. The vascular bundles are 1-4 in number. The petioles have a variable shape as rounded, semi-circular or nearly heart-shaped with undulate and slightly wavy. The vascular bundle is U-shape, with 6-14 in numbers. The vascular bundles of the stems are connective forming 2 rings. The mucilage or schizogenous cavities, pith cavity, capitate glands and hairs are present or absent. The styloid, prismatic crystal and silica crystal sand are observed in stem. The anatomical characters of leaves, petioles and stems have tendency to support species identification.
