The effects of white kwao krue (PUERARIA MIRIFICA) on reproductive performance of crossbreed Thai native does
Abstract:
The thesis evaluated the effect of P. mirifica on reproductive performance and provided the possibility of combination with estrous synchronization to improve reproductive efficiency. Experiment 1 aimed to evaluate the effect of P. mirifica on reproductive performance in crossbreed Thai native does. Twenty-one does were allocated into 3 groups and orally force-fed with the suspension of P. mirifica crude powder for 21 days: 1) 0 mg/kg BW/day (CON); 2) 1,000 mg/kg BW/day on Day 21-42 (FEC); and 3) 1,000 mg/kg BW/day on Day 32-53 (FMC). The results showed that the supplementation contributed to higher percentages of receptive behavior. On the other hand, it caused higher number of undeveloped follicles, lower number of follicles/cycle and higher number of anovulatory follicles. Moreover, FMC had higher number of early CL regression. Furthermore, the administered groups had lower fecal progesterone concentration during exposure. Experiment 2 aimed to study the different doses of P. mirifica supplementation in-between PGF2α injection. Three groups of 21 does were synchronized estrus with two-doses PGF2α injection 14 days apart and fed with P. mirifica at 0, 500, or 1000 mg/kg BW/day (PM-0, PM-500, and PM-1000, respectively) in-between PGF2α injection. The results showed that PM-500 and PM-1000 were shorter onset to estrus and time to ovulation, accompanied with higher intensity of estrus and longer estrous duration than PM-0. In addition, PM-500 had higher number of ovulatory follicles than PM-0 while had higher number of CLs on Day 7 as and fecal progesterone concentration on Day 12 than PM-1000. Experiment 3 aimed to compare the pregnancy rate between the does with or without P. mirifica supplementation in-between PGF2α injection. Sixty does were synchronized estrus with two-doses PGF2α injections 14 days apart and allocated into 4 groups: 1) control and AI (C+AI); 2) received PM-500 and AI (P+AI), 3) control and natural service (C+N), and 4) received PM-500 and natural service (P+N). The results showed that P+AI had higher estrous rate, pregnancy rate and kidding rate than C+AI. Likewise, P+N had higher estrous rate, pregnancy rate and kidding rate than C+N. In conclusion, P. mirifica had more effects on the reproductive performance in cyclic does. In addition, 500 mg/kg BW/day of P. mirifica supplementation during estrous synchronization could increase reproductive performance and efficiency of the traditional protocol.
