A study of sentence connectors by Thai EFL learners with different levels of proficiency

Abstract: Conjunctions and linking adverbials play significant roles in establishing textual cohesion and coherence by providing connection between linguistic units. This study aims 1) to compare the use of additive / contrastive conjunctions and linking adverbials that are commonly used by Thai EFL learners with different proficiency levels in their writing. Also, 2) to investigate the preferred position of additive / contrastive linking adverbials in a sentence by Thai EFL learners with different proficiency levels. The data were collected from the Thai Learner English Corpus (TLEC), which consists of a collection of English essays written by Thai undergraduates (intermediate level and advanced level), and Thai journalists (professional level). The findings revealed that professional writers employed additive linking adverbials, contrastive conjunctions, and contrastive linking adverbials the most frequently, while advanced learners utilized additive conjunction the most often. Intermediate learners, on the other hand, employed additive / contrastive conjunctions and linking adverbials the least frequently. In terms of possible positions, this study found the use of linking adverbials in the initial and medial positions in relatively high frequency. The final position, however, was the least popular position of linking adverbials. The findings can be implied that the use of additive / contrastive conjunctions and linking adverbials might be influenced by levels of proficiency. L1 interference is another possible factor that causes misuse of conjunctions and linking adverbials. Additionally, insufficient knowledge towards the variety of possible positions might lead to inflexible positioning of linking adverbials.
