Abstract:
The objectives of this thesis is the development of an alternative distribution for count data with excess zeros, namely, the zero inflated beta-negative binomial (ZIBNB) distribution which is the mixture distribution of Bernoulli and BNB distributions. Some properties of the proposed distribution such as the probability mass function, mean, vairance, skewness, kurtosis and its special cases; the zero inflated beta-geometric distribution and the zero inflated Yule distribution are presented. The maximum likelihood estimation is employed to the model parameter estimation. In addition, the Monte Carlo simulation is conducted to illustrate the performance of parameter estimation based on sample size, proportion of zeros, selected parameter values. From the results of the of simulation study, the mean squared error of the parameter estimators from MLE tends to decrease when the sample size increases and the estimated parameter are close to the true parameter values when the sample size is large. Furthermore, the two actual datasets are employed for illustration of the proposed distribution. The result shows that, the ZIBNB distribution is suitable for fitting these real data in application by comparing to the ZIP and ZINB distributions based on the Anderson-Darling test statistic for goodness of fit test and some information criteria such as the Akaike information criterion and the minus log-likelihood.
