Integration data-driven learning and collaborative learning for vocabulary pedagogy of EFL students
Abstract:
The use of Data-Driven Learning (DDL) in the classroom has grown constantly. However, most DDL studies have focused on high-proficiency students rather than lower proficiency students. In addition, no studies have been conducted to explore outcomes and processes when integrating DDL and collaborative learning. In response to those two gaps in knowledge, this study was conducted to examine the processes and outcomes of collaborative vocabulary learning through DDL exercises in a student group which included low-proficiency students. Ten weekly DDL activities following the observe-hypothesis-experiment (OHE) approach were prepared focusing on vocabulary for the tourism industry. The participants were thirty-six Business English students at a University in Northeastern of Thailand. These students were paired in three different ways according to their English course G.P.A.s. The quantitative and qualitative data were collected to measure students improvement and their attitudes towards the application of DDL. The results revealed that the students vocabulary knowledge improved significantly after participating in DDL activities. Besides, all groups of students showed the ability to cope with DDL exercises through the OHE learning model which can be used as a guideline to create DDL exercises and develop vocabulary teaching activities for multi-ability classrooms.
