Study of the stability indices for the thunderstorm forecasting in Northern Thailand
Abstract:
Study of atmospheric stability indices to forecast thunderstorms in Northern Thailand from sounding data of Chiang Mai meteorological station for 1,391 days between April and October, 2006 through 2015, resulting in the indices that can be used for thunderstorm forecasting include Showalter Index (SI), Lifted Index (LI), K Index (KI), Cross Totals index (CT), Vertical Totals index (VT), Total Totals index (TT), and Convective Available Potential Energy (CAPE). By using 4 statistical methods, include accuracy (ACC), frequency of mistaken (FoM), frequency of correctly non-forecast (FoCN), and Heidke skill score (HSS), causes the thresholds for thunderstorm forecasting in Northern Thailand as follows; SI ≤ -0.5, LI ≤ -1.5, KI ≥ 37, CT ≥ 21, VT ≥ 23, TT ≥ 43 (all units are in degree Celsius), and CAPE ≥ 500 J kg-1 . Even though the value of each indices is obtained, we should take several indices into consideration the thunderstorm occurrences for the accuracy in the usage of thunderstorm forecasting in Northern Thailand.
