Effectiveness of learning strategies-based moel on enhancing thai undergraduate students' EIL textual reading-writing performances, rhetorical-language learning strategies and self-efficacy beliefs
Abstract:
Oxfords language learning strategies model (1990, 2001) has been widely accepted as an effective English language learners training strategies. However, a paradigm shift toward English as an international language (EIL) has brought one major challenge to learners in coping with a variety of rhetorical styles of writers from diverse cultural backgrounds. This classroom research composing of three main objectives was 1) to examine Thai students performances in EIL textual reading-writing, 2) to investigate their rhetorical-language learning strategies in EIL textual reading-writing, and 3) to explore their self-efficacy beliefs in EIL textual reading-writing. Thirty-three mixed-ability first-year undergraduate students majoring in English Education were selected as participants. The data collection, which was conducted and analyzed before and after the implementation of the strategies, was carried out by using both quantitative and qualitative techniques. The results of effectiveness index (EI) revealed that EIL textual reading-writing performances of students in different proficiency groups had been improved. It was also found that these different students displayed a variety of correct answers, the frequency of borrowing words from sentences in reading sources to use in their writing tasks, and using correct patterns of language when writing in their own words. Additionally, their uses of rhetorical-language learning strategies and self-efficacy beliefs were enhanced. Furthermore, their vivid changing and gradual processing in terms of reading and writing, self-efficacy beliefs were reported in teachers journal, together with some effective and limited ways of their employing of rhetorical-language learning strategies. Therefore, Oxford model can be enhanced with rhetorical strategies to facilitate the students to reach the world of EIL.
