Thai EFL teachers' beliefs and practices on ELT for global citizenship in Southern Thailand
Abstract:
The aims of this study were threefold: Firstly, to investigate and understand the beliefs related to EFL teaching and learning that Thai teachers of English in Narathiwat Province hold and bring to their instructional practices. Secondly, to explore the influence of an English language teacher education program on teachers awareness, needs, beliefs and practices. Finally, to investigate English language teachers awareness and their teaching practices in their current classes from students reports. The study was classified into two phases: 1) the English Language Teachers Education (ELTE) Training Program, and 2) the Monitoring. The first phases participants were twenty-four EFL teachers from public secondary schools, private Islamic schools, and vocational schools in both Narathiwat and Pattani Province, whereas the second phases participants were the nine EFL teachers from three secondary schools in Narathiwat Province, including six students from each of the teachers classes.
The data were gathered by means of open-written questionnaires, interviews with the teachers, interviews with the students, classroom observations, and post-lessons reports. The data were analyzed qualitatively employing coding and content analysis. Overall, the findings shed many insights into EFL teachers needs, awareness, beliefs and teaching practices, including some challenges in English language teaching. The findings also provide some beneficial information for policymakers and educators for promoting teachers professional growth, conducting effective training programs, and further researches related to teachers beliefs and teaching practices.
