Abstract:
The sport of figure skating is a distinct youth sport that has been explored continuous in the field of sport psychology literature, especially in terms of training and athlete development programs. Among the many athlete development programs, The Long Term Athlete Development(LTAD) model has come to represent a sportswide set of principles that significantly influences national sports policy in many countries. The LTAD focuses on long-term development, which allows for the best opportunity of sport participation and optimal sport potential throughout life (Balyi, Way, & Higgs, 2013). However, little research is known about the possibility of LTAD model adoption and its impact on a figure skating association. With this in mind, the purpose of the present study was to add much needed evidence for the possible adoption of the LTAD model of Figure and Speed Skating Association Thailand (FSAT), providing insight into the perceptions skating experts have with the model. To achieve this objective, semi-structured interviews and focus groups were conducted with more than ten skating and sport experts from both local and international settings. Upon completion of the interviews, they were transcribed and analyzed, and the results demonstrated the significant benefits and challenges of the model, while proposing potential modifications of how to improve overall awareness, knowledge, and communication of LTAD within Figure and Speed Skating Association of Thailand (FSAT).
