A Research on Chinese Internet Slang During the COVID-19 Pandemic
Abstract:
The objectives of this research were to examine and analyze 58 Chinese internet slang during the COVID-19 Pandemic period of 20202022 from three perspectives: type, field source, connotation, and usage,and to provide teaching suggestions for internet slang from the results. The specific research results were as follows: The results from the survey of the 58 Chinese internet slang during the epidemic period of 20202022 appeared that eight types found as follows: new words with new meanings (57%), Chinese character contraction words (14%), old words with new meanings (12%), Chinese homophonic words (5%), contraction words with letter symbols (4%), Chinese English mixed homophonic words (3%), homophonic words from dialects (3%), and homophonic words from foreign languages (2%). From the examination of the domain sources of 58 Chinese internet slang terms during the epidemic period from 2020 to 2022 appeared that there were four sources as follows: Chinese internet slang was mostly found in daily life for 62%, social hot events (29%), culture, sport and entertainment (7%), while only 2% of Chinese internet slang found in current event and important political events. The examination of semantic connotations of 58 Chinese internet slang by the domain source classification was done and the usage background was also introduced. From the analysis of Chinese internet slang during the epidemic period, this study proposes teaching suggestions and opinions for international Chinese teachers on online vocabulary from the following six aspects were as follows: classifying type of teaching, introducing background knowledge, teaching with examples, emphasizing the standard and the accuracy, distinguishing teaching objects and updating teaching content to support Chinese learners to understand the meaning, connotation and internet slang better. Moreover, the teachers should develop their own language and communication abilities.
