Abstract:
Numerical research was conducted to evaluate the thermal enhancement factor of a
three-start spirally corrugated tube (TSSCT) combined with a triple-channel twisted tape
(TCTT). Five different twist ratios with y/p values between 0.0625-1.0 in both counter and co-
current arrangements (CW-TCTT and CCW-TCTT) were examined at the same tape width ratio
of w/D = 0.34. A 360° twist pitch, p/D = 8, depth ratio e/D = 0.16 and clockwise twist were set
to be constant in a three-start spirally corrugated tube. The results revealed that the cases
investigated generated swirl flow and increased heat transfer by the disruption of the boundary
layer thickness due to the generation high fluid velocity near the tube wall. Decreasing the y/p
value increased heat transfer. The CW-TCTT with y/p = 0.5 gave a maximum thermal
enhancement factor of 1.41 higher than that of a plain tube at Re = 5000.
