Abstract: This study took the imageries of the four mythical animals in the 504 metaphorical idioms of the four mythical animals included in the Chinese Idioms Dictionary as the research objects, applied the theories of metaphor and imagery in cognitive linguistics and zero-degree deviation theory in rhetoric, and took the acquisition of Chinese as a second language as the perspective, and crossed the relevant theories of cognitive linguistics, Chinese semantics, rhetoric, cultural linguistics et al., and utilized the literature analysis method, the qualitative analysis method, the statistical method, the diagram method, the inductive method, the descriptive research method, and other research methods to study the metaphorical mechanism of the imageries of the four mythical animals. By analyzing the metaphorical mechanism of imageries the four mythical animals, this study found that the semantics of Chinese metaphorical idioms of the four mythical animals can be understood by cognitively analyzing imageries of the four mythical animals in idioms, using the analysis of the metaphorical mechanism of imageries of the four mythical animals (metaphors of the four mythical animals creating imageries of the four mythical animals, types of metaphorical meanings of imageries of the four mythical animals, cultural hierarchies of imageries of the four mythical animals, and other imageries combining with the imageries of the four mythical animals as the entry point. Based on the research findings, this study suggested that textbook authors, teachers, and learners of Chinese as a second language adopt the imagery interpreting method, the imagery teaching method, and the imagery understanding method, respectively, to incorporate these research findings into the interpretation, teaching, and learning of Chinese metaphorical idioms of the four mythical animals. These suggestions also apply to acquiring animal metaphorical idioms in Chinese as a second language.
