Abstract:
The purpose of this project was to design an anti-roll bar on a students
Formula car, to study the result of the design of the anti-roll bar on the Formula car and
to study the result of installation of the anti-roll bar on the Formula car. The calculation
of roll gradient for the car without an anti-roll bar was found to be 2.42 deg/g. However,
the roll gradient results of 8-m radius in left cornering and right cornering, collected.
using a micro controller, were 2.46 deg/g and 2.47 deg/g respectively. Therefore, the
calculations differed from the testing results by around 0.04-0.05 deg/g (2.17-2.72 percent). The
design selected a 0.71-inch in diameter and 19.29-inch in length solid shaft as the anti-
roll bar, with roll stiffness of 1245.11 1b-ft/deg. After installing the anti-roll on the
Formula car, roll gradients of the car when driving left cornering and right cornering
were 1.53 deg/g and 1.5 deg/g respectively. This signified that the anti-roll bar helped to
decrease roll gradient of the car by around 0.95 deg/g.
