An investigation of dialogue translation: A case study of the 2006 film charlotte's web's subtitles
Abstract:
The aim of this research was to examine the different translation techniques
employed in the subtitling of the movie. The Thai entertainment industry has
progressively become more dependent on subtitles, with a predominant shift in
language direction from English to Thai. Furthermore, the inclusion of subtitle
translation has been a component of the translation courses offered at numerous
universities. The current research used a total of 1,467 words, phrases, and sentences
from the movie Charlotte's Web (2006) as its source material. In this study, the
translation methods developed by Vinay and Darbelnet (2000) were utilized. A
comparison was made between the subtitles in English and those in Thai in order to
determine the approach that was taken when translating individual words, phrases,
and sentences. After the data was analyzed, the findings indicated that oblique
translation was the method that was used the most frequently in the process of
translating the film Charlotte's Web (2006). This method was discovered 1,001 times,
which accounted for 51.81% of all the translation methods that were discovered in
the study. Rewriting, which is a subcategory of adaptation and falls under the umbrella
of oblique translation, was the strategy that was utilized the most in order to translate
the subtitles for this movie. There were a total of 716 occurrences of the rewriting
method, which represented 37.06% of all the methods that were found in the study.
