Abstract:
Research on Application of Silk-and-Filagen-Blended Yarn in Mudmee
Pattern Design for Men's Clothing is aimed to: 1) study suitable properties of
silk-and-filagen-blended yarn; 2) design Mudmee fabric patterns from silk-andfilagen
-blended yarn; 3) analyze physical properties of silk-and- filagen -
blended fabrics; 4) design men's clothing from silk-and-filagen-blended
Mudmee fabric; and 5) survey satisfaction of sample groups on the design of
Mudmee patterns for men's metrosexual clothing with patchwork technique.
The concept of Islamic art was applied in studying suitable properties of silkand-
filagen-blended yarn to design Mudmee patterns. Out of 3 Islamic art
patterns, one pattern was selected. The yarn was tied according to the pattern
and weaved into a piece of fabric. Physical properties of the fabric were
analyzed before making a collection of men's metrosexual clothing out of the
fabric with patchwork technique. The satisfaction survey was conducted with
the sample groups of 30 people, comprising designers, merchandisers, visual
merchandisers, graphic designers, and those with weaving experiences of no
less than 5 years. Purposive sampling technique was applied with statistical
analysis, percentages, means, and standard deviations.
Three yarn property tests were comparatively conducted, that is,
breaking strength test, bursting strength test, and yarn size. It was found that
with the 1st ratio of 70:30, yarn breaking strength is at 14.97 newton, bursting
strength is at 11.12%, and the size of yarn is 574.7 denier (categorized as
heavy type). The yarn is most suitable to be developed as prototyped silkand-
filagen -blended yarn. Mudmee fabric design is inspired by Islamic art.
Out of 3 shortlisted Islamic art patterns, pattern 3 is the most liked as it is
beautiful and relevant with design inspiration, with the pattern elements that
well reflect Islamic art identity. Therefore, the pattern is suitable to be woven
into Mudmee. According to the result of physical property test, fabric weight is
96 g./ m². On threads per unit length, warp yarn is 85 threads per inch,
whereas weft yarn is 56 threads per inch. Fabric thickness is 0.24 millimeters.
Deodorizing performance percentage is 78.42%. Q-Max is at the standard level
(0.16 w/cm2 - 0.17 w/cm2). UV Protection result on both wet and dry fabric is
at the excellent level with 25 in UPF value, and UV transmission prevention
rate is 96.0% - 97.5% (1-4 hours of sunlight exposure) On men's clothing
design, collection 2 is found to be the most appropriate for men's
metrosexual clothing with patchwork technique since it fits the definition of
metrosexual in terms of cutting, and materials. Its pattern is actually
wearable, beautiful and modern, and gives off a clear metrosexual vibe in line
with fashion trend and inspiration. The analysis of overall satisfaction over
Mudmee fabric shows the highest level of satisfaction (𝑥̅ = 4.94). Satisfaction
of the sample groups on the design of men's metrosexual clothing with
patchwork technique is also at the highest level (𝑥̅ = 4.88), both for the
beauty, color, cutting, and practicality.
