The standard Thai tones produced by Chinese Zhuang students

Abstract: This study examined the influence of Zhuang's tone split pattern and Zhuang-Thai cognates on the Standard Thai Tones (STT) of the Chinese Zhuang students (CZ); identified their STT's acoustic characteristics in comparison with the acoustic characteristics of native Thai speakers; and found the relationship between their tone production and the perception judged by native Thai speakers. The findings indicated that the difference of tone split patterns between native and target language did not affect the assigning of tones, either for the C+Z, who were native speakers, or the C-Z, who were only Zhuang nationals but no experience of Zhuang language. The C+Z's most confused tones were T3, T2, and T4 respectively, while the C-Z's most confused tones were T3, T2, T5, T4, and T1. Therefore, T3, T2, and T4 respectively are the tones that should be put under close observation. It was found that the C+Z's confusion rate did not appear more on the Zhuang-Thai cognate wordlist than the other wordlist, and the C+Z's tonal confusion rate was extremely lower than those of the C-Z. Their higher performance implies that the higher acquisition of Thai tonal system, supports the positive assumption that cognate can increase the likelihood of L1-to-L2 tonal transfer. The production study revealed that the standard Thai tones produced by the CZ had their own tonal features, which were significantly different from the standard Thai tones produced by Thai native speakers (NS), in all aspects and all tones. In the onset comparison, the CZ's onset of T1 and T5 were lower, while T2, T3, and T4 were higher than those of the NS. In the offset comparison, the CZ's offset of T5 was lower, while T2, T3, and T4 were higher. T3 and T5 were the most different ones in shape. In tonal duration comparison, most of the CZ's duration were longer than those of the NS, especially T3 in all three tone patterns and T4, while T1 and T2 were found in all both shorter and longer duration than the NS. Only T2 in checked syllables with long vowel and T5 were quite similar to those of the NS. It was also shown that the C+Z's tone production were more different from the NS than those of the C-Z. The study also showed that, in native Thai listeners' perception, T3 and T4 in non-checked syllables were the most non-native tone, while T2 in checked syllables with short vowel was the most native-like one. Therefore, there was no certain correlation between the tone production of the CZ and the perception of Thai native speakers.

Abstract: งานวิจัยนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาอิทธิพลของการแตกตัวของเสียงวรรณยุกต์ในภาษาจ้วง และ อิทธิพลของคำร่วมเชื้อสายจ้วง-ไทย ที่มีต่อเสียงวรรณยุกต์ไทยมาตรฐานของนักศึกษาจีนชาวจ้วง ระบุเสียงวรรณยุกต์ไทยมาตรฐานของผู้เรียนกลุ่มดังกล่าว เปรียบเทียบกับเสียงวรรณยุกต์ของเจ้าของภาษา และแสดงความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างเสียงวรรณยุกต์ของผู้เรียนกับการรับรู้ของเจ้าของภาษา ผลการศึกษาพบว่า รูปแบบการแตกตัวของเสียงวรรณยุกต์ในภาษาแม่กับภาษาเป้าหมายซึ่งแตกต่างกันมิได้มีอิทธิพลต่อการเลือกเปล่งเสียงวรรณยุกต์ของนักศึกษาจีนชาวจ้วงทั้งกลุ่มเป้าหมาย (C+Z) ที่ใช้ภาษาจ้วงในชีวิตประจำวันและกลุ่มเทียบ (C-Z) ที่เป็นชาวจ้วงโดยกำเนิดแต่ไม่มีประสบการณ์ภาษาจ้วง เสียงวรรณยุกต์ที่ผู้เรียนกลุ่ม C+Z สับสนมากที่สุด ได้แก่ เสียงโท เสียงเอก และเสียงตรี ตามลำดับในขณะที่เสียงวรรณยุกต์ที่ผู้เรียนกลุ่ม C-Z สับสนมากที่สุด ได้แก่ เสียงโท เสียงเอก เสียงจัตวา เสียงตรี และเสียงสามัญ ตามลำดับ เสียงวรรณยุกต์ที่พึงระมัดระวังเป็นพิเศษจึงได้แก่ เสียงโท เสียงเอก และเสียงตรี ตามลำดับ พบว่าผู้เรียนกลุ่ม C+Z มิได้มีสถิติความสับสนในการเลือกเปล่งเสียงวรรณยุกต์ในรายการคำร่วมเชื้อสายมากกว่ารายการคำไทยแต่อย่างใด นอกจากนี้ ผู้เรียนกลุ่ม C+Z ยังมีสถิติความสับสนในการเลือกเปล่งเสียงวรรณยุกต์ต่ำกว่าผู้เรียนกลุ่ม C-Z อย่างมาก จึงอาจทำให้อนุมานได้ว่าผู้เรียนชาวจีนเชื้อสายจ้วงรับระบบวรรณยุกต์ไทยได้ดีกว่า สนับสนุนข้อสันนิษฐานเชิงบวกที่ว่าคำร่วมเชื้อสายจะช่วยส่งเสริมการถ่ายโอนระบบวรรณยุกต์จากภาษาแม่ไปยังภาษาเป้าหมาย ผลการวิเคราะห์ในเชิงกลสัทศาสตร์พบว่า เสียงวรรณยุกต์ไทยมาตรฐานของนักศึกษาจีนชาวจ้วงมีลักษณะของตนเอง แตกต่างจากเสียงวรรณยุกต์ของเจ้าของภาษาในทุกลักษณะและทุกวรรณยุกต์อย่างมีนัยสำคัญ เมื่อพิจารณาเปรียบเทียบจุดเริ่มต้นวรรณยุกต์ เสียงสามัญและเสียงจัตวาของผู้เรียนชาวจีนเชื้อสายจ้วงจะเริ่มต้นในตำแหน่งที่ต่ำกว่าเจ้าของภาษา ในขณะที่เสียงเอก โท และตรีจะสูงกว่า ส่วนจุดสิ้นสุดวรรณยุกต์ เสียงจัตวาของผู้เรียนชาวจีนเชื้อสายจ้วงจะสิ้นสุดในตำแหน่งที่ต่ำกว่าเจ้าของภาษา ในขณะที่เสียงเอก โท และตรีจะสูงกว่า เมื่อเปรียบเทียบรูปลักษณ์วรรณยุกต์ เสียงโทและเสียงจัตวามีรูปลักษณ์ที่แตกต่างจากเจ้าของภาษามากที่สุด ส่วนในเรื่องค่าระยะเวลาของเสียงวรรณยุกต์ พบว่าเสียงวรรณยุกต์ของนักศึกษาจีนชาวจ้วงมีค่าระยะเวลามากกว่าเจ้าของภาษา โดยเฉพาะเสียงโทในทุกรูปแบบพยางค์และเสียงตรี แต่ในเสียงสามัญและเอกมีค่าระยะเวลาทั้งน้อยกว่าและมากกว่า เสียงเอกในพยางค์ตายสระยาวกับเสียงจัตวาเป็นเสียงที่มีค่าระยะเวลาใกล้เคียงกับเจ้าของภาษามากที่สุด นอกจากนี้ยังพบว่า ผู้เรียนกลุ่ม C+Z ออกเสียงวรรณยุกต์แตกต่างจากเจ้าของภาษามากกว่ากลุ่ม C-Z ส่วนผลการวิเคราะห์การรับรู้แสดงให้เห็นว่า เสียงวรรณยุกต์ที่ทำให้ผู้ฟังรู้สึกได้ว่าไม่ใช่เสียงของเจ้าของภาษามากที่สุดคือ เสียงโท และเสียงตรีในพยางค์เป็น ขณะที่เสียงเอกในพยางค์ตายสระสั้นกลับเหมือนเสียงของเจ้าของภาษามากที่สุด ดังนั้น เสียงวรรณยุกต์ไทยมาตรฐานของนักศึกษาจีนชาวจ้วงที่วิเคราะห์ได้จึงมิได้ความสัมพันธ์แน่นอนกับการรับรู้ของเจ้าของภาษา
