A study of the needs and problems in English listening and speaking skills of Buddhist monks at Wat Arun Ratchawararam : a tourist destination temple in Thailand
Abstract:
The objective of this research is to investigate the needs and problems of English listening and speaking skills of Buddhist monks at Wat Arun Ratchawararam, a tourist destination in Thailand. The participants of this study were 31 monks residing at Wat Arun Ratchawararam. A questionnaire was distributed to and collected from the participants. Data analysis was conducted using the statistical software SPSS, with findings presented in terms of frequency, percentage, mean scores, and standard deviation. The research findings indicate a significant need for English listening skills among the Buddhist monks, particularly in understanding questions related to the significance of places, comprehending Chinese English accents, and interpreting questions about the history of places. The necessity for English speaking skills was also high, with the most critical need being the ability to initiate or respond to greetings, followed by the capacity to express or respond to gratitude. In terms of challenges, the study found that the problems associated with English listening skills were predominantly high. The most substantial issue was understanding long questions or detailed information, followed by difficulties in comprehending English accents from Russian speakers. The least problematic area was understanding questions about directions. Similarly, the problems with English speaking skills were largely high, with the most significant challenge being the ability to provide information about the history of places, followed by difficulties in explaining the architecture of places. The least problematic area was expressing or responding to gratitude.
