An assessment of selected working fluids in an organic cycle machine
Abstract:
This article compares the performance of Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) by the use of
different working fluids - Isopentane, Refrigerant 22 (R22), Refrigerant 134a (R134a) and
Refrigerant 245fa (R245fa). These working fluids use low-temperature sources between 80-
120 C, which can be produced from waste heat, solar-thermal energy, and geothermal
energy. The experiment on ORC using Centrifugal Turbine reveals that the suitability of the
high-pressure pumps for working fluid affected their efficiency. The results of the
experimental observations indicate that the ORC using R245fa has an efficiency of 30%,
which is greater than the other potential working fluids like Isopentane, R22, and R134a.
Further studies regarding cost and economics are needed before this could be commercially
used
