Abstract:
Teaching first year students in general is
problematic. Programming, using Java as first
language, also presents a challenge, and the situation
becomes more compounded when the class is large. We
faced exactly such a situation when we taught ISS112
Introduction to Programming at the University of
Botswana. In this paper, we present some of the
experiences and challenges that we faced when we
taught ISS112. We drew comparison with other
institutions and also proffered some possible solutions
to some of the problems we faced.
