Cultural representations in English language textbooks used in multicultural classrooms ‪: a case study of a primary school in Samut Sakhon province

Abstract: The aim of this study is twofold: 1) to analyze the cultural diversity contents represented in the ELT textbooks used in the multicultural classrooms in a primary school located in Samut Sakhon and 2) to investigate the teachers' perceptions toward the cultural representations in the ELT textbooks used in the multicultural classrooms. The target textbooks include six student books and six activity books (grade 1-6) written by the foreign writers. The participants are three English language teachers. Content analysis was adopted to categorize the cultural aspects and cultural sources represented in both textual and visual forms. Moreover, the classroom observations and the in-depth interviews were conducted after analyzing the textbooks. The findings reveal the imbalance of the cultural aspects and cultural sources. Based on the cultural aspects, the perspectives referring to small "c" cultures are underrepresented. Based on the cultural sources, the source cultures referring to the students' cultural backgrounds and the ASEAN regional cultures are rarely integrated. Moreover, the teachers indicate that the target cultures are widely represented. They advocate to integrate the cultural diversity in the ELT textbooks; however, the migrant students' cultures and the ASEAN regional cultures are hardly mentioned.

Abstract: งานวิจัยนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์ 1) เพื่อวิเคราะห์เนื้อหาความหลากหลายทางวัฒนธรรมที่ ปรากฏในหนังสือเรียนภาษาอังกฤษที่ใช้ในห้องเรียนพหุวัฒนธรรมในโรงเรียนระดับ ประถมศึกษาแห่งหนึ่งในจังหวัดสมุทรสาคร และ 2) เพื่อสำรวจการรับรู้ของคุณครูต่อวัฒนธรรมที่ปรากฏในหนังสือเรียนภาษาอังกฤษดังกล่าว หนังสือที่ใช้ในการศึกษาคือหนังสือเรียนภาษาอังกฤษ 6 เล่ม และหนังสือแบบฝึกหัดภาษาอังกฤษ 6 เล่ม ที่ใช้ในระดับชั้นประถมศึกษาปีที่ 1 - 6 ผู้เข้าร่วมงานวิจัยคือคุณครูสอนภาษาอังกฤษจำนวน 3 ท่าน งานวิจัยนี้ใช้การวิเคราะห์เนื้อหาในการจัดประเภทเนื้อหาทางวัฒนธรรม โดยวิเคราะห์ทั้งในรูปแบบเนื้อหาและภาพประกอบ ผลวิจัยพบว่าการนำเสนอวัฒนธรรมในหนังสือเรียนยังไม่มีความหลากหลายเท่าที่ควร วัฒนธรรมประเภท Perspectives หรือ Small c แทบจะไม่ปรากฏในหนังสือเรียน ยิ่งไปกว่านั้น วัฒนธรรมที่เกี่ยวข้องกับผู้เรียนและวัฒนธรรมของกลุ่มสมาชิกอาเซียนแทบจะไม่ปรากฏในหนังสือดังกล่าว จากการสัมภาษณ์เชิงลึก คุณครูชี้ให้เห็นว่าหนังสือเรียนภาษาอังกฤษดังกล่าวมุ่งนำเสนอวัฒนธรรมในกลุ่มประเทศที่ใช้ภาษาอังกฤษเป็นภาษาแม่มากกว่าวัฒนธรรมอื่นอย่างเห็นได้ชัด นอกจากนี้ คุณครูชี้ให้เห็นถึงความสำคัญในการบูรณาการเนื้อหาทางวัฒนธรรมที่หลากหลายในหนังสือเรียนภาษาอังกฤษ อย่างไรก็ตาม คุณครูแทบจะไม่กล่าวถึงวัฒนธรรมของนักเรียนข้ามชาติและวัฒนธรรมในอาเซียน
