Integrating global Englishes activities in a regular English classroom
Abstract:
This study aimed to investigate the integration of Global Englishes activities into a regular English classroom. The purposes of the study were 1) to integrate Global Englishes activities into a regular classroom 2) to explore limitations, extension, potential, or other aspects of the integration 3) to study students attitudes toward Global Englishes. The participants were 31 Grade 9 students. Quantitative and qualitative methods were used in this study. The research instruments were 1) lesson plans adapted from the GELT framework 2) an online survey, to explore the students attitude toward Global Englishes before and after learning in the regular English classroom integrated with Global Englishes activities 3) Video recording, used to explore a classroom environment and to observe the phenomenon in each activity 4) researcher's reflections were the aspects that the researcher interested in more-in-depth data in order to see the effect in each activity. The findings revealed that integrating GE in a regular English classroom is possible. It is not only an approach but it is practical. The result of the online survey found that the participants attitudes toward the Global Englishes increased after integrating GE activities at .05 level of statistical significance. However, the student's perception of English ownership is rather narrow only from the speakers in the inner circle. Supported with the coding analysis of students attitudes showed that studying GE is the 'originality' experience for the participants in this study context. Furthermore, there are many aspects that influence the integration of GE into the classroom; lesson design and teaching equipment. Finally, this study provides models of GE activities that can guide and benefit the teachers in order to apply to suit different classroom contexts.
