Abstract:
The purposes of this research are 1) to investigate the types and frequencies of hedges and boosters and their distributions and 2) to compare the usage of hedges and booters between gay and lesbian speakers in their speeches on showcases. Forty showcases used as the data sources and gained by purposive sampling are taken from www.youtube.com. A total of 58,036 utterances are analyzed by using revised Hylands theory of Hedges and Boosters (2005) proposed by Friginal et al. (2017). The results show that the highest frequency of occurrences of hedges is that of the content-oriented hedge (accuracy-oriented) (63.98%), followed by that of the speaker-oriented hedge (33.91%) and audience-oriented hedge (2.11%). In addition, the highest frequency of occurrences of boosters is amplifiers (57%) followed by emphatics (43%). The results of this study indicate that accuracy-oriented hedge is used to decrease the degree of violence of the issues and the amplifier booster is used to emphasize the certainty of the speakers on certain issues. This information may help to make audience understand the intention of gay and lesbian speakers when giving speeches on sensitive topics to the public and allow the audience to understand the LGBTQ+ speakers better.
