A study of the implementation of mother tongue-based language education in facilitating English language learning skills for Thai higher education students
Abstract:
The implementation of mother tongue-based language education employs students' first language as a medium of instruction to teach students in consort with academic content has been discussed in a number of research due to its various benefits on language learning and teaching. This study aims to investigate the effects of the implementation of mother tongue-based language education in facilitating English language learning skills for Thai higher education students and to explore students' attitudes towards mother tongue-based language education. In doing so, it will offer an effective way in facilitating language learning skills to help students overcome difficulties in L2 learning and enhancing students' achievement in language learning. The participants were 100university students at a private university in Chiang Mai, Thailand. Based on the data collected via questionnaires, semi-structured interviews, and the experimental study, the findings revealed that the mean scores of the post-tests in the experimental group and the control group increased significantly. The mean scores of the changes in the experimental group were also greater than those of the control group. The finding indicated that the method could generate a higher level of achievement in English language learning skills among the experimental group. Moreover, the students confirmed various benefits of L1 use and supported L1 use in English classrooms especially in explaining English grammar rules and clarify the meanings of the words, expressions or sentences.
