The application of situational teaching method for English vocabulary skill in Chinese junior high school

Abstract: The aims of this study were to compare grade 8 students’ English vocabulary skill before and after using situational teaching method and investigated their satisfaction towards the use of situational teaching method in a English vocabulary course in Jiangxi Province, China. The sample group consisted of 30 Chinese students studying in grade 8 in Jiangxi Province, China. Data were collected through the use of four lesson plans, pre-test,post-test, and questionnaire, and analyzed using descriptive statistical analysis and paired sample t-tests. The data collection lasted four weeks and the teaching experiment was conducted online. The results of the pre-test and post-test showed that students in the sample group improved their English vocabulary skill, with a mean difference of 3.76 points between the post-test score (x̅=22.03. SD=3.03) and the re-test score (x̅=18.27,SD=3.12). The data collected from the questionnaire indicated that all items in the questionnaire were rated highly. The majority of the students in the sample group expressed positive satisfaction with the application of the Situational Approach to English vocabulary learning. This study demonstrated that the use of the situational approach provided an alternative and effective way of learning English vocabulary.
