Confronting the crisis : the evaluation of business risks and performance of companies in Thailand during 1997-2021
Abstract:
Risk is an unavoidable part of every business operation. They are unpredictable and can occur either in internal or external environments. From the past to the present, numerous external crises have caused negative impacts on the business that contributed to the world economic crisis, causing the closures of many global businesses. Hence, the purpose of this study is to identify business risks affecting the efficiency of business operations during crises. The business risks in this study are capital structure risk, liquidity risk, and insolvency risk. The assessment of the relationship between business risks and operational efficiency will be measured by key performance indicators, including Return on asset (ROA), Return on equity (ROE), and Tobins Q. The scope of this study focuses on companies listed on the Stock Exchange of Thailand during 1997 2021 in all industries except the financial industry. By using secondary data, a total of 226 samplings will be collected and analyzed by descriptive and inferential statistics. The results of this research revealed that business risks affect the operating efficiency of each industry differently. There are four industries that are affected by all types of business risks: agro and food industry, consumer products industry, industrials industry and resources industry, except the only one which is the property and construction industry. Including during times of crisis, it affects the business performance of some companies as well
