Effects of the Health Belief Model Educational Program on Perceptions and Preventive Behaviors of COVID-19 in Secondary School Students
Abstract:
OBJECTIVE: The research objective was to study the effects of the Health Belief Model Educational Program by comparing the mean score levels, before and after program participation of perceptions to prevent COVID-19 and preventive behaviors of COVID-19 in the secondary school students.
METHODS: This research was quasi-experimental research with one group pre- and post-test design. The 105 samples were the secondary school students of Wat Suttharam Secondary School, Bangkok who were selected by purposive sampling. Research tool was the Beckers Health Belief Model Educational Program. The samples who participated in the program received knowledge of COVID-19 and perceptions to prevent COVID-19 with the application of the Health Belief Model. The program was implemented for 13 hours (3 days). The data were collected by questionnaire and analyzed by percent, mean, standard deviation and paired t-test.
RESULTS: The results showed that, before and after program participation, the samples had a very good level of overall perceptions to prevent COVID-19 scores (X = 16.10 and 16.50 respectively) and the score was better after program participation with statistical significance (p < 0.01). The samples had a very good level of preventive behaviors of COVID-19 score (X = 2.22 and 2.34 respectively) and the score was better after program participation with statistical significance (p < 0.01).
CONCLUSION: The Health Belief Model Educational Program on perceptions to prevent COVID-19 and preventive behaviors of COVID-19 was effective. The heath care teams and school teachers could apply the program to promote knowledge of prevention of COVID-19 and respiratory diseases to other secondary school students.
