Abstract: To obtain comprehensive understanding of ritual, Thai merit-making in particular, the study supplements existing ritual theories by developing an analytic model to make the approach more systematic and exhaustive. The model consists of six dimensions, namely cognitive, bodily, communicative, performative, discursive, and constitutive dimension. A wide range of disciplines are brought into play to illustrate how ritual operates in three levels: individual, interpersonal, and social. As shown by the title, the concept of discourse used in the social sciences is the center of gravity of the whole model. By this emphasis, the main focus of the problem is how the sense of reality is conditioned by the ritual. The answer can be elucidated by the model. Furthermore, as the study finally finds, by postulating certain reality the ritual turns to be a fundamental part of Buddhist practice in Thai culture. A substantial part of the study is done in theoretical sphere to form a comprehensive conceptual framework. Data used in the analyses as the test case mostly come from experiences of the researcher in daily basis on a par with participant observation. The whole outcome of the study suggests that the model can be useful in the study of ritual, religion, and culture.

Abstract: เพื่อทำความเข้าใจอย่างครอบคลุมในพิธีกรรม โดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่งการทำบุญของไทย การศึกษานี้ได้วิเคราะห์พิธีกรรมด้วยทฤษฎีต่าง ๆ ที่มีอยู่ พร้อมด้วยพัฒนาเครื่องมือเชิงแนวคิดที่ช่วยให้การวิเคราะห์มีระบบและครอบคลุมมากยิ่งขึ้น แบบจำลองที่พัฒนาขึ้นประกอบด้วยมิติหกด้านของพิธีกรรม กล่าวคือ ด้านการรู้คิด ด้านร่างกาย ด้านการสื่อสาร ด้านการกระทำ ด้านวาทกรรมและด้านปฏิบัติ ทั้งนี้มุมมองจากศาสตร์ที่เกี่ยวข้องได้ถูกนำมาใช้เพื่อทำความเข้าใจการทำงานของพิธีกรรมในสามระดับ คือ ระดับปัจเจกบุคคล ระดับกลุ่มบุคคล และระดับสังคม จากที่ระบุในหัวข้อวิทยานิพนธ์มิติด้านวาทกรรมคือจุดศูนย์กลางของการวิเคราะห์ทั้งหมด ผลของการศึกษาแสดงให้เห็นว่าความจริงที่เรารับรู้ถูกสร้างขึ้นเชิงวาทกรรมโดยพิธีกรรมนั่นเอง นอกจากนี้การศึกษายังพบว่าด้วยการสร้างความจริงบางอย่างขึ้น พิธีกรรมจึงเป็นรากฐานสำคัญของวัฒนธรรมพุทธของไทย งานหลักของการวิจัยอยู่ที่การพัฒนาทฤษฎีและเครื่องมือเชิงแนวคิด ข้อมูลส่วนใหญ่ที่ใช้ในการวิเคราะห์เก็บจากประสบการณ์ตรงของผู้วิจัยในชีวิตประจำวัน เทียบได้กับการสังเกตการณ์แบบมีส่วนร่วม ผลจากการศึกษาโดยรวมพบว่าเครื่องมือที่พัฒนาขึ้นสามารถใช้เป็นประโยชน์ได้ในการศึกษาพิธีกรรม ศาสนา และวัฒนธรรม
