Integrated learning styles and prefered digital learning types approach for developing an online learning system for university students' SQL learning in a database management course
Abstract:
With the benefits of online learning environment, learning materials related to personalized information have been rapidly developed. However, the online learning support system, especially for learning Structured Query Language (SQL) in a database management system course, has been developed based only on single-source of personalization information. To cope with the drawback, this study proposed an innovative approach named a learning style-preferred technology type decision model, which combines two main sources of learning styles and digital learning type preference. The model was employed to develop an online SQL learning support system. Therefore, two empirical studies were conducted in this research. In the first study, 190 university students were recruited to validate the proposed model for recommending digital learning material to individual students. It led to the second study involving 90 university students to empirically evaluate the effectiveness of the decision model-based personalized learning support system in terms of SQL learning achievement, perceptions, and motivations. The results of the two-part experiments showed that (a) the decision model was able to recommend proper digital learning material to individual students based on their learning style and preferred digital learning type; (b) the learning achievement the students who followed the personalized learning material were significantly greater than of those who learned with the non-personalized learning material; and (c) the learning support system based on the proposed model could promote positive students' perceptions and positively motivate them to learn SQL. It is recommended that this developed system of the database management course should be implemented in all universities in Thailand.
