Environmental design for mental health : a case study of Silom-Sathorn neighborhood
Abstract:
Environmental Design for Mental Health: A Case Study of the Silom-Sathorn Neighborhood is the study of how to design the physical environment and infrastructure to improve the quality of life, particularly in terms of mental health. The study examined existing theories relating to environmental elements and mental health in order to propose a new environmental development guideline for mental health, and then applied the guideline to improve the physical condition and resolve an urban problem pertaining to site selection. Since the COVID-19 epidemic, individuals have experienced economic insecurity, worry, life disruption, stress, and mental and physical health difficulties. Thailand is one of the countries facing severe strain as a result of the pandemic. The mental health statistics of Thailand indicate that urban dwellers experience less happiness and greater stress. Bangkok also faces a major mental health crisis, particularly among adolescents and those of working age (National Statistical Office of Thailand, 2020). A well-designed, accessible, and affordable environment is associated with improved mental health. This thesis seeks to investigate the relationship between urban environment and mental health in order to build an urban environment that positively promotes the mental health of the urban populace. By adhering to the new environmental design criteria, it is anticipated that the mental health and stress levels of urban residents who circulate through developed urban features will improve. The design based on research will be implemented in the chosen site, the Silom-Sathorn area. The property is situated in the heart of the Central Business District (CBD), which is comprised of high-rise office buildings, dense development, and a large number of office workers. Due to the abundant public space surrounding the BTS station and office sector, this region has a great potential for using the environmental design guideline for mental health. The research results are separated into two categories. The first step consists of identifying the correct guidelines for the design of physical environment that promotes well-being and mental health. The second step is to apply the guideline to the case study area of choice
