The Relationship Between English Listening Strategies and Abilities of Undergraduate English Major Students
Abstract:
This research aimed to: 1) study English listening strategies employed by undergraduate English major students, 2) investigate English listening abilities of undergraduate English major students; and 3) study the relationship between English listening strategies and English listening abilities of undergraduate English major students. The samples were 96 undergraduate English major students, selected by cluster random sampling technique. The instruments used to collect the used to collect the data were BRU English test, a questionnaire, and a semi-structured interview. The obtained data were analyzed by using frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, and Pearson Product moment Correlation Coefficient. The finding were as follows:
1. English listening strategies used by undergraduate English major students both in overall and each strategy were at a high level. The highest mean score was social affective strategy, followed by metacognitive strategy, and cognitive strategy, respectively.
2. English listening abilities of undergraduate English major student both in overall and each strategy were at a moderate level.
3. The overall relationship between English listening strategies and English listening abilities of undergraduate English major student was at a moderate level. when considering in each of English listening strategies, it was found that meta cognitive strategies had a very strong relationship, followed by cognitive strategies which had a strong relationship and social effective strategies with a very weak relationship, respectively.
