Kittisak Jermsittiparsert. Political implication in Bot Lakhon Reung Inao. Doctoral Degree(Social Sciences). Kasetsart University. Office of the University Library. : Kasetsart University, 2017.
Abstract:
Bot Lakhon Reung Inao, a royal composition in King Phutthaloetla Naphalai, is one of Thailands major traditional literature. It has been praised as a good book for a script of dancing play and a textbook for studying Thai traditions. Many academics and students have studied it in several aspects, including (1) the history and the connection to other editions of Inao, (2) performances and adaptations based on the literature, (3) language, literary arts, and communications, (4) characters, (5) social and cultural conditions, and (6) others. However, although it can be observed that this literature has been infused with political thoughts, there has been no study of such dimension. This research is, therefore, done to answer the questions as to why Bot Lakhon Reung Inao is chosen to reflect political thoughts, and what political thoughts appear in this major literature. Primarily a documentary research, this research employs Bot Lakhon Reung Inao, the royal composition in King Rama II, as the main text. The textual analysis and the contextual analysis are done, and it is found that within the historical contexts of the time when this literature was composed and then reworked, the core messages of this literature are consistent with at least two conditions, including the states political ideology and the societys consumption of literatures. Above all, the literature is also constructed as political teachings for governors, particularly in examples of what governors shall not do or the seven Raja-adharma, which include (1) lust in women, (2) selfishness, (3) speaking or acting without thinking, (4) lying or telling untruths, (5) being rash and quick-tempered, (6) using brute force to solve problems, and (7) failing to uphold traditions.
