Performance evaluation of microbial fuel cells using microflora of cow manure as a biocatalyst
Abstract:
Electricity production and wastewater treatment capabilities of microflora intrinsic to cow manure were investigated in the present study. Four dual-chamber microbial fuel cells with graphite electrodes were used for the investigation. Effects of moisture content, sodium chloride, and methylene blue on the power generation using cow manure slurry were assessed. In comparison, 60.4% of higher current under a 1000 ohms resistance was achieved with manure to water weight to weight maxing ratio of 1:15, than 1:3 mixture. Optimum cell performance was obtained with the 20 g/L of NaCl in the anodic chamber; producing a maximum power density of 4.323 mW m-2 and internal cell resistance of 6076 ohms. 40 g/L of NaCl decreased the internal resistance further to 4167 ohms, but the maximum power density was also decreased to 3.6 mW m-2. Methylene blue did not significantly improved the performances of the MFC in terms of power generation and internal resistance. Mixed culture microflora from cow manure was inoculated to domestic wastewater and dairy wastewater. As a result, maximum power densities under 1000 ohms external resistance were increased by 38%, and 72% for domestic wastewater and dairy wastewater, respectively. COD removal efficiency was increased form 77.4% to 82.2% for domestic wastewater, 34.4% to 42.6% for dairy wastewater.
