Abstract: This study is mainly associated with developing a lithium ion based battery charging technique. The conventional methods of charging are suffering by high energy loss during charging and slower charging speeds. Traditional chargers enable over driven chemical reactions inside the battery cells, which further causes bad battery health, lower cycle life, capacity fading, unnecessary battery heating and voltage sagging effects. The purpose of this study is to propose and demonstrate an adaptive pulse charger for Lithium ion batteries and Lithium ion polymer batteries. This study has three major phases. In the first phase an algorithm has been proposed and implemented to pulse charge the battery with adaptively changing duty cycle and frequency based on instantaneous cell conditions of the battery. The proposed algorithm has been further developed in second phase to improve the charging speed. Finally, a basic study has been done to demonstrate the feasibility of using artificial neural network technique to improve the proposed method with less iterations. According to the results of three phases, the proposed system has shown comparatively better charging performances and further modifications and improvements are suggested in last chapter.
